The Special Olympics New Jersey (SONJ) Summer Games is a flagship annual event held at The College of New Jersey, drawing thousands of athletes, families, VIPs, volunteers, and spectators. It’s a celebration of inclusion, perseverance, and sportsmanship—spread across multiple venues over a three-day period.

Ensuring a secure but welcoming environment for all participants is a top priority for SONJ and TCNJ leadership.

 
Initial Needs & Challenges
For the 2023 games, event organizers needed a professional security partner that could:

Provide visible yet approachable security presence.

Manage large-scale entry screening without disrupting the festive environment
Coordinate with local law enforcement and venue operations.

One of the major challenges was the open campus layout, requiring coverage over a broad area while maintaining quick response capability in case of emergencies or medical events.

 
Our Approach
Tri-Shield Security & Protection Services began by:

Conducting a pre-event site walk-through.
Meeting with event logistics directors and local emergency services.
Identifying key zones of concern including athlete housing, ceremony spaces,and medical support tents.
We created a customized zone coverage strategy and assigned officers to key posts and mobile response units for rapid deployment.

 
Deployment Overview
Tri-Shield deployed a team of over 100 officers, Officers trained in crowd management, de-escalation, and special needs sensitivity
All officers were briefed on:

Interacting with individuals with intellectual disabilities
CPR, AED, and trauma response protocols.

We worked directly with the Director of Event Operations and coordinated throughout with campus security supervisors and municipal police liaisons.
